Joseph and Elfi Muutuki pastor a church plant among the Indian community (primarily “Asians”) in Nairobi, Kenya. Most of the people in their multi-ethnic and racially mixed congregation are from Hindu, Sikh and Christian backgrounds. Their unique congregation sing songs in Hindi, English, Swahili, Gujerati and Tamil. Every three months they organize a “satsang” (a Hindi word for fellowship) which is held in an Asian neighborhood.
They also have men’s cookouts, called “Koroga Bonga” (the word describes what they do, i.e. stir what they are cooking and talk). This has been one of the best methods they have found for reaching out to Indian men. They are also involved in ministry for the Asian handicapped who are outcasts in society.
In addition to being the pastor of New City Fellowship, Joseph, a member of the Missouri Presbytery, also teaches Old Testament courses at Daystar University, which is a liberal arts college. Elfi is involved in Women’s Bible Study and the visitation of Asian women, of whom some are secret believers. Elfi also helps out as a nurse volunteer in an AIDs clinic at the outskirts of Nairobi.
